The hair and beauty sector is constantly embracing new technologies; and with more and more affordable and flexible options available, many salons are keen to get on board. Introducing new platforms can help them to help them better communicate with their customers, and give their business an extra boost by drawing in new clients. However, with so many options out there it can be tricky knowing where to start; what should salons be prioritising?

Here are a few pointers to help get you started:

Online bookings

Allowing clients to book appointments online is all about providing ease and accessibility. One of the ways you can do this is by using software such as SalonIQ or Shedul, so that clients can view your available appointments and book themselves in. Most platforms will also offer additional features such as automation, will allow you to send out automatic thank you messages and appointment reminders through SMS and email. There is also the opportunity to use the software to manage your stock, which means you’ll receive notifications when you need to re-order more items.

Another option is to partner with third party apps such as Treatwell and list your business through them. Your salon will show up when clients are searching by location or for particular services, and they can book appointments directly through the app in just a few clicks.

Online reviews

Often spoilt for choice, customers will now look to online reviews to help them decide where to take their business. These reviews can offer information and opinion on anything; from the quality of the service, to the attitude of staff and cleanliness of the salon. According to BrightLocal’s 2016 Consumer Review Survey, 84% of people trust online reviews as much as a personal recommendation, and 7 out of 10 consumers will leave a review for a business if they're asked to. To make sure you’re getting lots of positive reviews out there, it’s important to build strong relationships with clients and if they’ve had a good experience, encourage them to leave you a review.

As well as asking your customers to leave reviews on Google and Facebook, there are also specific sites such as SalonSpy which hosts an online community for visitors to go online and search for trusted reviews by location. Another useful feature of the platform, is the ability for salons to send their customers a text message encouraging them to leave a review.

Having online bookings and reviews in place for your salon could make all the difference when it comes to communicating with your customers and attracting new clients. And with all the technology you need at your fingertips, it’s never been easier!
