Small Business Growth Stories: Grace & Thorn

Company: Grace and Thorn

Founder: Nik Southern

Founded: 2011

Location: Hackney, Soho, Brick Lane and online – delivering all over the UK

Who are Grace & Thorn? Grace & Thorn is a boutique florist bringing a new wave of greenery to capital city - “green up your gaff!” As well as creating bespoke bouquets and plant selections, Grace & Thorn cater for events, weddings, and run workshops on flower arrangement and terrarium creation. They also sell botanical themed homewares and stationary.

The business has taken off in the last few years, particularly on social media; and now Grace & Thorn has roots in Hackney, Soho and Brick Lane with clients all over the UK. Founder Nik’s first book, How Not To Kill Your Plants, will be published later in 2017 too.

1. What inspired the creation of Grace & Thorn?

“When I opened Grace & Thorn in 2011, I was tired of seeing uninspiring rows of houseplants in plastic brown pots next to flowers forced into tight bouquets struggling to breathe, so I decided to do my own thing and bring out the best in plants, and encourage flowers to dance and sing!”

2. Other than offering exposure and attracting more customers, how has your popularity on social media affected your business?

“We’ve had people travel from the other side of London, and even places like Holland and Paris, to come and see the shop because they’ve seen it in magazines. And we always get people just coming in to take photos. I always get nervous that they’re sussing us out to start a shop around the corner but it’s all for Instagram."

3. What advice would you give to an entrepreneur just starting out?

"If you put your mind to something and really believe in it, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t happen. All of my girls think I’m so ballsy but you have to be. When I say I’ve made it off my own back, I literally have. Cease the bloody day. Nobody’s going to hand it to you.”
