Today’s good news story comes from Eleanor Hall, a seamstress and wardrobe assistant who was working on Mamma Mia in the West End before lockdown began. When lockdown restrictions caused theatres to close, Eleanor made the decision to set up her own sustainable sewing business: Seldom Seam.

We caught up with Eleanor to chat about what Seldom Seam is all about, and how it’s been setting up a brand new business during the unpredictable year that is 2020.

You can shop from Seldom Seam here, and check our Eleanor’s latest projects - which include NHS scrubs and embroidered pouches -  here.

Tell us about Seldom Seam and what you’ve set out to achieve?

Seldom Seam is an ethical sewing business with an emphasis on sustainability and helping the planet. My aim is to get people to reduce textiles waste by upcycling old clothes, instead of buying new ones. I offer anything from repairs to alterations to turning old garments into completely new ones!

I also sell a range of eco-friendly, sustainable products including reusable, 100% cotton face masks and cutlery pouches. I would love to see more people buying sustainable and reusable alternatives to single use, disposable plastic products.

How did Seldom Seam come into fruition?

Before lockdown I was working as Wardrobe Assistant at Mamma Mia in West End alongside my own business making and altering costumes for film and theatre. The lockdown in March hit my career pretty hard and, with theatres remaining closed, I am still unable to return to work.

In the beginning of lockdown, I was making scrubs for the NHS, clothes for myself and masks for friends and family. The masks were getting some really good feedback so I decided to set up an Etsy shop and it all began from there.

Were there any hurdles you had to overcome setting up your business during lockdown?

My business has been set up during Covid 19 as a way to work from home, so there haven’t been many hurdles to overcome. Getting hold of materials can be difficult at times due to the knock on effect of everything being closed.

Seldom Seam’s masks have been particularly popular amongst customers, with feedback including:

“So comfortable, superior quality - beautiful stitching and shape - a cut above any other mask I have worn!”

“I love these masks! They’re perfect for wearing with spectacles, especially whilst working.”

“These are the most comfortable face coverings I've bought, and so good to be able to adjust the elastic yourself too. Also love the colours so much!!”
