Godfrey’s is a traditional, family-run fish and chip restaurant in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. Functioning as both a takeaway and dine in restaurant, the business has won over fish and chip lovers from near and far with their fresh and sustainable menu – and gone on to win dozens of awards, including a Top Ten Finalist position at the 2017 National Fish & Chips Awards.

‘I opened Godfrey’s in 2012, with my mum and dad, who have worked in the fish and chip industry for over 30 years,” says business owner, Luke Godfrey, “we take pride in serving simple but delicious fish and chips, and being at the heart of the local community.”

The menu at Godfrey’s is packed full of freshly prepared dishes; including homemade pies and tartare sauce, and chips peeled just that morning. All of the fish served at Godfrey’s comes from sustainable sources too, and their cod and haddock is all MSC certified.

As well as doing good things by fish, the business is hugely involved in working with the local community too; presenting talks on sustainability and entrepreneurship in schools, sponsoring the Harpenden Film Society, and being a Platinum Partner with the Hospice of St Francis.

Godfrey’s was nominated by customer, Johnny Doyle, who says:

“I like everything about Godfrey’s, from the food, to the service, to their sustainability too. The pies and chips are especially good – and I’m not sure if you get deep fried halloumi in every chip shop, but you do at Godfrey’s and it’s something else. It’s exactly how it should be. And perhaps most importantly, the portions aren't small!

“Their staff are always welcoming and the local kids that help out are all well-mannered, which does make a big difference! I wouldn’t say I go there all too often, but they’re incredibly friendly and still remember me when I turn up.

“And they've got their ethics right as well, I don't fully understand the sustainability of fish stocks but their menu is plastered with ethical fishing stickers from top to bottom which is always good to see.”
