This June our Small Business of the Month award goes to The Rook and Gaskill, an award-winning pub located just outside the city walls of York.

The pub itself dates back as far as 1818 under previous names; but as it rests on a historic site of an old gallows, The Rook and Gaskill takes its current name from the last two men – a pair of notorious sheep rustlers - to be hanged there in 1676.

Product of a partnership between Castle Rock Brewery and Wharfbank Brewery, the Rook and Gaskill stocks a great selection of cask ales, craft beers and ciders; as well as hosting regular weekly events including live jazz, a games night and a battle of the bands at the end of each month. Since reestablishment in 2012, it’s fast become a neighbourhood favourite and York’s 15th highest rated nightlife spot on TripAdvisor.

Just last year, the venue underwent a major renovation project to allow the addition of 20 new beer lines too!

The Rook and Gaskill has been nominated by Liberis Data Scientist, Ryan Skeels who says that with “10/10 burgers and a legendary quiz night!” the pub was by far his favourite local whilst he was studying in York.
