Petals of Oban, Florist
Petals of Oban is an award winning Interflora florist shop in Oban, run by Lynette MacArthur. The shop was first opened 20 years ago by Lynette’s mother Agnes, and has since remained a real family affair. Both work in the business, selling a full range of floral gifts for all occasions, they often draft in other members of the family during busy periods. With the aim to service every request, even the unusual ones, which have included a lamb and a Tasmanian devil. It’s this level of customer service which secured the business the title of Florist of the Year 2015 at the Scottish Independent Retails Awards, North West region.
Petals of Oban has received seven cash advances from Liberis, which have been used in various ways including to refurbish the shop front, fit new windows and to buy a new van. It’s important that the shop and delivery vehicle always look good as they reflect the quality of the business. Also, because the delivery van does such high mileage, it’s very important to replace it regularly.
Importantly, working with Liberis has enabled Lynette to capitalise fully on the seasonal highs of the year, by ensuring she has always has stock for her periods. Mother’s Day is their biggest event, followed by Valentine’s Day and the summer wedding season. On top of these events, Lynette needs to make sure she has the right flowers and plants in stock to service the wide range of other orders that come in daily from her online shop.
Lynette explains, “we have to make the most of each event in the calendar and that’s about having enough stock in to meet demand. Flowers for Mother’s Day can cost in excess of £5,000 and pre-buying for weddings and funerals can also run into thousands.”
Having such cash flow freedom has also changed the way Lynette deals with suppliers, and she now pays them at two weeks instead of eight: “this puts me in complete control, which is great and works really well. I pay them, but only pay Liberis back when I do business. Some days we can put £1,000 through the card machine and on other days it can be £35.00, but the payback mirrors this. There’s no pressure at all. It really is the perfect funding for us.”
